Personal Flooring & Window Covering Consultations By Appointment Only, Call Ahead For Scheduling
Ever start laying tile only to notice your first row is slightly off? By the time you reach the far wall, every row after it looks worse. It's one of the most common DIY flooring mistakes — and one of the easiest to prevent.
At Pro Floors and Blinds, we walk customers through a simple trick called the 3/4/5 rule before they even pick out materials. It takes less than a minute to learn. It works on tile, hardwood, laminate, and vinyl plank. And it can save you hours of frustration on install day.
In this guide, we break down the 3/4/5 rule in plain language. You'll learn what it is, how to use it step by step, why it matters for your finished floor, and when it makes more sense to call in a pro.
The 3/4/5 rule is a simple way to check that a corner is a perfect 90-degree angle before you start laying flooring. It comes from the Pythagorean theorem. Measure 3 feet along one wall from the corner and mark it. Then measure 4 feet along the other wall from the same corner and mark it. If the diagonal between those two marks is exactly 5 feet, your corner is square. If not, you need to adjust your starting line. This method works for tile, hardwood, laminate, and vinyl. Any experienced flooring store team will tell you this is the single most important step before your first piece goes down.
The 3/4/5 rule is just a quick way to check if a corner is square. A square corner is a true 90-degree angle. If your corner isn't square, your flooring will drift off-line as you move across the room.
The math behind it is the Pythagorean theorem — but you don't need to remember that. All you need to know is that 3, 4, and 5 are a set of numbers that always form a right angle. If those three measurements line up, your corner is good to go.
This works on any flooring type. Tile, hardwood, LVP, laminate — it doesn't matter. The rule applies the same way every time.
3 feet + 4 feet + 5 feet = square corner ✓
Follow these five steps before your first piece of flooring goes down.
For larger rooms, you can scale the numbers up. Use 6-8-10 or 9-12-15. The ratio stays the same, and the bigger measurements make it easier to get an accurate read across a wide space. The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) recommends this same scaling method for large-area installations.
Skipping this step might save you five minutes at the start. But it can cost you hours — and money — by the end.
Floors that start out of square show problems at the far wall. Planks or tiles that looked straight near the door will drift into visible gaps or crooked lines on the other side of the room. Grout lines in tile become uneven and look off, even to an untrained eye.
There's also the waste. Cuts that should be simple don't fit right. You end up trimming extra material or tossing pieces that can't be used. That adds up fast, especially with pricier materials like natural stone or engineered hardwood.
The hardest part? Once the flooring is down, it's tough to fix. Pulling up installed tile or glued-down planks is a big job. It's much easier to spend a few minutes checking your corner before you start.
We've seen customers bring in photos of DIY tile jobs where the last row is off by over an inch. That almost always traces back to skipping this one step.

The 3/4/5 rule is easy to use in a simple, rectangular room. But not every room is that straightforward.
L-shaped rooms, diagonal layouts, and spaces with lots of corners make it harder to set a square starting point on your own. One miscalculation early on can ripple through the entire install. Large-format tile and natural stone add another layer of difficulty. These materials require tighter tolerances. Even a small alignment issue shows up fast on a big tile surface.
Then there's the subfloor. Uneven spots, moisture, or old adhesive residue can cause problems that go beyond layout. Tile lippage, cracking, and even voided manufacturer warranties can result from an unprepared subfloor. A professional can assess and address those issues before a single piece goes down.
At Profloors & Blinds, our team handles layout and installation as one service. You don't have to figure out the measurements on your own and then hope the installer agrees with your starting point.
